INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S WEEK

VENDOR FEATURE - CIRCLES.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day here at Park Street Gourmet, we’re highlighting our female vendors making a difference in the local food industry by asking them to share an inspiring and empowering message to all of us.

Today, we speak with Thanuja, the lady behind CIRCLES.

Q&A:

Q: How long have you been running your business for?

"It has been 1 ½ years since I started CIRCLES"

Q: What do you think helped you get this far in your business? How can we mentor young girls to pursue their dreams and keep dreaming bigger?

"I could say my biggest strength in getting this far has been God and My family. Without their support, all this would not have been possible.

My advice for young girls would be to never give up on their dreams. They need to understand that no dream is too big, once you set your mind to achieve it.

All you need is proper planning and a sharp vision. Goal setting is the main key in achieving your big dreams. Break it down, have short term goals and keep celebrating yourself each time you achieve one of your goals, which will be your motivator to keep getting closer to your final goal."

Q: Share an empowering moment as a woman that inspired you.

"As a woman, seeing women reach political, economical and social heights in Sri Lanka has been so inspiring for me. Compared to the past, recently so many ladies in this country have been able to positively influence these areas in the country and have been identified and rewarded for it."

Q: What is one piece of advice to all women who are juggling between home and work?

"I was a working mom in the corporate sector for over 18 years, until I decided to start my own business. Being a mom of three beautiful children, it has definitely not been the easiest of rides. Once you fail a few times, you do reach a point where you find a way to balance between the two. It requires a lot of organising and planning to get to perfection. The support that you get from your family is essential. Helping them understand your work and making them a part of it goes a long way."

Q: Why do we need more women in leadership?

"I believe we need more women in leadership to create a balance in the political and economic structure. It will bring us a little bit closer to the gender equality which is a current issue which we are facing."

Q: Who’s your female role model and why?

"Personally I don't have a single role model but I do lookup to all women who have achieved something in life. May it be big or small, every woman has their own struggles and to be able to get through them and to come to a noticeable position in life requires a lot of bodily and emotional strength."

Q: Share a message of wisdom for International Women’s Day.

"As women, we should not try to be inferior or try to dominate, what we should instead try to create is a positive influence and a balance in the world. An equality, where we all have peace and no one has to go through struggle.

As women, we are required to play many roles in life. Starting from a daughter, wife, mother, business women, leaders…the list is endless. Some of which are unique to us and some which we share with men.

Regardless of which role we play, may it be one or many at a given time, we have endless opportunities of creating positivity in each role. It's definitely up to us to decide how we are going to take up the challenge and strive at it."
