VENDOR FEATURE - mohksha kombucha

As we celebrate International Women’s Day here at Park Street Gourmet, we’re highlighting our female vendors making a difference in the local food industry by asking them to share an inspiring and empowering message to all of us.

Today, we speak with Anupama, the lady behind Mohksha Kombucha.

Q: How long have you been running your business for?

"I’ve been running Mohksha Kombucha as a business for little over two years now."

Q: What do you think helped you get this far in your business? How can we mentor young girls to pursue their dreams and keep dreaming bigger?

"When I started the Mohksha kombucha, I never thought I’d come this far. It was initially intended to make few dozens of bottles and sell them to couple of places to keep this as my side business. But when my kombucha reached to the wider audience, people always came back craving for more. My customers kept me going on and on… So my main advice to youngsters is to be honest with your product, whatever that you are making. Give your 100%. Don’t make a half product or be a sad copycat. Be genuine with what you do and humans understand honest effort."

Q: Share an empowering moment as a woman that inspired you.

"I never had any retail sales experience before. When I opened a little stall for Mohksha Kombucha at Good Market Colombo for the very first time in my life, it was a terrifying experience. But when I looked around, I saw so many women hustling just like me, passionately selling their products, it gave me so much of courage and inspiration to continue, not be embarrassed and be strong. Looking at others who are trying and struggling at the same level as you are in gives me hope that I don’t have to be scared. I’m not the only one."

Q: What is one piece of advice to all women who are juggling between home and work?

"To be honest, you can’t balance things all the time. First you must make peace with that. Sometimes you’ll have to forget your business for couple of days, or even weeks to keep up with your office work or attend to family matters. Another time you’d have to forget your family and office work to concentrate on a business project. Time and effort that you allocate when you juggle between your work, business, family won’t be consistent all the time. We must gracefully change between rolls without overthinking. You’d burnout and crash sometimes. But you always have to remember that you are doing what you do for a purpose. And finally, always catch up with what you have missed. It could be a call to follow up on a client, or cooking a special meal to your husband because you missed out last week’s date night…"

Q: Why do we need more women in leadership?

"I think we are currently living in a time where our societies are going through major changes. The oppressed have new found voices, including women and other marginalized segments. They need new leaderships with fair representation of their own kind who understands and empathize their problems and needs. Diversity in leadership brings fresh perspectives to the table. Everything calls for more women in leadership positions. "

Q: Who’s your female role model and why?

"I adore and look up to Ms. Otara Gunawardhana. She is everything that I want to be. Building successful businesses from scratch… caring so much about animals and the environment… Living with values and purpose… Inspiring people… Before I was exposed to any of her revolutionary opinions on simple things like street dogs or keeping a little water bowl out for birds on hot days, I must admit that I was completely blind and dumb about little acts of kindness. She made me more kind towards the voiceless. She opened the eyes of lot of people. Inspired so many youngsters. She showed us that it’s possible to do what she did and does, no matter where you are coming from."

Q: Share a message of wisdom for International Women’s Day.

"Tough times don’t last. Tough people do."
